Breaking news: Join the BLS Scientific Committee!

Invitation for applications to join the BLS Scientific Committee as Full Member

A vacancy is open for one full member of the BLS Scientific Committee (BLSSC).  Applicants for the previous call for new members (2017) are invited to reapply.

Functions of the BLS SC

The main functions of the BLSSC are:

1. To act as the scientific committee for the annual conference (to set up abstract submission, peer review submissions, judge presentations at conference, and recommend awards for best overall and best ‘novice’ posters, best overall and best ‘novice’ oral presentations).

2. To ensure optimum membership of the BLSSC and to represent the scientific committee on the BLS Committee.

3. To act as the scientific committee to assess applications for the Lymphoedema Research Grant (LRG) including the Caroline Badger Clinical Research Fellowship Award (CBCRFA) and receive progress reports.

4. To coordinate responses to enquiries from BLS members and others regarding the evidence base and act as expert reviewers to external agencies (such as NICE, NHS England).

5. To develop and maintain communications about research and the evidence base within and without the BLS, such as encouraging a focus on members’ research activities in the BLS newsletter News & Views, maintaining the SC pages on the BLS website and communicating selected research publications to the membership.

The majority of BLSSC business is conducted by email. There is one meeting which takes place on the eve of the annual BLS conference at the conference venue.


Criteria for Full Member

The SC comprises nine full members and one honorary member. Following the departure of longstanding member and Past Chair, Katie Riches, one position for full member is currently open. 

Essential criteria for a full member of the Scientific Committee are:

    • full membership of BLS
    • a first degree or equivalent
    • experience of writing for publication
    • experience of poster and oral presentation.

Holding a higher degree is a desirable criterion. It is also desirable that a mix of skills and abilities is represented on the SC, i.e. different disciplines, research experience.  In this call, we are seeking members who would be particularly interested in coordinating expert review input into groups such as NICE.

Adequate expertise and stability are essential for the effectiveness of the SC. It is therefore hoped that members will remain on the committee for a period of five years.

2. A brief CV

3. A covering letter describing what qualities you would bring to the BLS SC.

Decisions will be made by the SC in the New Year. This will give the opportunity for the new member to take part in the coming year’s activities relating to the Lymphedema Research Grant (LRG) and the 2019 conference abstracts.
