Course Summary:
Established complicated lymphoedema requires intensive decongestive lymphatic therapy. The Casley-Smith method of teaching Manual Lymphatic Drainage and Multilayer Lymphoedema Bandaging will be used. This courses is for health care practitioners in any setting who have completed 'Lymphoedema, Diagnosis, Assessment and Prevention of Complications and 'Lymphoedema; Assessment and Management' or equivalent key worker training. The aim of the course is to develop practitioners' knowledge and clinical skills to enable them to apply appropriate management strategies in relation to patients with complicated chronic oedema due to lymphatic failure. It includes genital and head and neck lymphoedema.

This course is offered under the Graduate Diploma/Certificate in Lymphoedema Management. Five lymphoedema courses are offered - please see our website for further details. Two of these are offered in both Glasgow and Newcastle. The courses attract professionals from all over the UK. Therefore all courses offer a mix of attendance in blocks, with some being supported by e-learning to minimise the cost of attendance and accommodation. The programme is informed by the British Lymphology Society documents ‘Chronic Oedema: Population and Needs (2001)’ and ‘Framework for Education (2001)’, which identify the levels of knowledge and skills required to meet the needs of various groups within the affected population. The teaching of Manual Lymphatic Drainage within the programme is based on the Casley-Smith method.

Courses within the programme may be undertaken at undergraduate or postgraduate level or simply for continuing professional development without academic assessment.
